The greatest creative achievements in history are rarely done in isolation, the lost generation in the salons of Paris, the great philosophers in the coffee shops of Vienna, and many other focal points of genius.
One of those places was the big, warm house in Israel of Mia Segal, Leora Gaster and their family.
There Moshe Feldenkrais would sit around the table with his friends exploring ideas … physics, yoga, philosophy, politics, Judo and the function of the body.
The discussions would last all day long and Moshe would sometimes fall asleep on the floor. He would be awakened by children running through the house. He would grab passing child who would provide him a way to try out a new idea that had just come to him. Being experimented on by Moshe was just part of life for Leora growing up in that house.
Moshe encouraged the family to learn Judo and they moved to Japan to become advanced black belts. Moshe and the family socialized together, ate together, and grew together. His insights were part of Mia and Leora’s family’s lives.
Out of that house was born a deep core that still lives in Mia and Leora.
For 16 years Mia was at Moshe’s side helping spread his knowledge. Both she and Leora have dedicated their lives to seeing the flame that was nurtured in that house in Israel grow and spread, not just as a reflection, but as a living thing.
“With you [Mia], I have reached summits that alone, I could not reach. The best lessons I ever gave, were inspired by your encouraging gaze”. — Moshe Feldenkrais
